How to Stay Fit on Your Vacation

Stephen Holt, Timonium personal trainer

Millions of readers of national fitness magazines including Shape, Women's Health, Fitness. Woman's Day, Family Circle, Runner's World, (and many others) have made their exercise programs both more effective AND more efficient with fitness and nutrition advice from "America's Baby Boomer Expert," Stephen Holt.

Of course I don’t want your fitness results to disappear before you get back home. Fortunately, these two simple steps are all you need to ensure you come back looking and feeling amazing.

Most vacation pounds are gained as a result of constant indulgence. Each meal becomes an opportunity to eat your heart out to the tune of “I’m on vacation!”

Look, I get that you’re on vacation and want to enjoy the richer tastes of life, but doing so at every meal is going to do a lot of damage to your waistline.

Rather than indulging constantly, use the 1/3 Rule. That is, 1/3 of your meals get to be “I’m-on-vacation” meals.

At this one meal each day go ahead and eat whatever you want. Enjoy your favorites and do so with no guilt. You can even say your trainer insisted on it! (Getting more does increase your metabolic rate.)

At your other meals each day you’ll keep it lean and green. Fill up on lots of greens, other veggies, and lean proteins. Pass on the breads, grains, potatoes and anything with added sugar.

Drink lots of water and avoid beverages that contain calories. (Yes, that includes alcohol. Okay, do your best.)

Make sure you move more than you usually do every day of your vacation. You’re probably in a beatiful and relaxing environment. This would be a great time for daily walks with your family. Or alone (if someone is having a tantrum. I won’t judge you.)

[I just found out my wife signed us up for something called “The Fiery Furnace Hike.” Now doesn’t that sound like some August fun?]

You certainly don’t have to go to the weight room and crank out one of our “Low B” workouts. Go ahead and let your movement/exercise be diverse.

Take a hike, go exploring on foot, swim in the ocean or bike through the town.

Enjoy your vacation! And when you get back home, call or email us for a fitness and fat reduction consultation and I’ll show you a step-by-step plan for getting you the body that you deserve – in less time than you think.
