I Start Where Your Physical Therapist Stopped

Your physical therapy ended, or your doctor looked at a scan and said you’re fine. Nobody told you what to do next, so you went careful.

Careful doesn’t build anything back. Building strength back is what we’ll do here.

I went and watched how the other side works

I volunteered in the Physical Therapy Department at Union Memorial in the early nineties. I followed Grand Rounds at Good Samaritan in the late nineties, back when a college teammate of mine led their Orthopedics department. My training included a supervised internship with two physical therapists. Plus, my wife is a rheumatologist.

None of that makes me a clinician, and I’ve never wanted to be one. But I know where their job stops, and that’s where mine starts.

You’ve been told to go lighter for years

Go gentler. Take it easy. Don’t overdo it. It sounds responsible, and it’s why so many women lose strength every year and blame their age.

Muscle responds to load. Take the load away and the muscle goes too.

So I’ll ask you to work at a level I call “appropriately challenging.” Enough to get a result, and something you can do today.

One trainer, and a screening before you lift

Your first step is the Smart Start. The gym is private, I own it, and I’ll be the one coaching you. What you do here is Custom Fitness Training: your program, written around your joints, not the room’s.

I build every program with my 3-4-5 Total Body Strength System. The Baltimore Sun called it “a more logical way to achieve fitness.”

Screening first

No drop-ins and no guest passes. We won’t add load until I’ve seen how you move.

Your own program

Built from your screening and your history, never a template.

The 3-4-5 System

Three planes of motion, four muscle sling systems, five movement patterns.

Twice a week

What I build every program around, and a schedule you can keep.

I decide how much you lift today

I’m Stephen Holt, CSCS. I’ve made that call close to 60,000 times. IDEA® named me Personal Trainer of the Year in 2026, ACE (American Council on Exercise) did the same in 2003, and the NSCA, who award the CSCS I hold, has named me a finalist three times.

I’ve co-authored two books, helped write the Personal Trainer National Board Exam, and was the first full-time personal trainer to sit on a state fitness advisory council. Prevention, Shape, Women’s Health, Parade, HuffPost and others have quoted me on training after 50.

How long my clients stay

18 years
Ever since I’ve started with Stephen’s personal training system, I haven’t been suffering with the constant neck and back pain I’d had for years. I believe it’s absolutely due to the fact that Stephen understands my problems and modifies my workout to strengthen the areas I need to keep strong to avoid pain.
Liz Keehner
Over 10 years
I have been training with Stephen for over ten years now. During that time, Stephen has truly molded me into a stronger and healthier person. I love coming in each time and having a different workout routine that is designed just for me. He knows just how to push you just enough to reach that next level.
